Class 36 A coaxial submarine cable having a steel wire core, an inner conductor surrounding the core, a layer of insulating material surrounding the inner conductor, an outer conductor and an outer non-metallic covering, has the outer conductor formed of one or more helicallywound tapes with an electrically-conducting shield surrounding the outer conductor. The shield may consist of helically or longitudinally applied tape and may be separated from the outer conductor by polythene or polypropylene tapes.
