Abstract
1,138,732. Curing olefin copolymer elastomers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 15 March, 1966 [19 April, 1965], No. 11403/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division H1] Curable, sulphur free compositions for covering electric cables comprise a normally solid ethylene/propylene copolymer elastomer and a minor proportion by weight of an organic peroxide, optionally together with an organic dioxime, polyethylene, a vinyl silane and/or carbon black. Preferred peroxides are those in which the peroxy groups are linked to tertiary carbon atoms. The dioxime may be succinaldehyde dioxime, glutaraldehyde dioxime, 2,5- hexanedione dioxime, para-quinone dioxime, para-benzoquinone dioxime, tetrachloro-parabenzoquinone dioxime, 2,5-dichloro-para-benzoquinone dioxime and tautomers such as paradinitrosobenzene and poly-para-dinitrosobenzene. The vinyl silane may be vinyl tris-(2- methoxy ethoxy) - silane. The compositions may also comprise antioxidants, curing aids such as liquid polybutadienes, fillers, dyes, pigments, stabilizers and processing aids, and may be extruded on to electric cables and cured. Compositions with and without carbon black may be applied to form successive conducting and insulating layers. Examples describe the curing of ethylene/propylene copolymer elastomers in the presence of dicumyl peroxide and (1) para-quinone dioxime, carbon black, zinc oxide, microcrystalline wax and oil together with (2) di.#.naphthyl para-phenylene diamine: (5) liquid polybutadiene, clay and oil together with (8) di-#-naphthyl paraphenylene diamine; (3) liquid polybutadiene, clay, zinc stearate and polymerized trimethyldihydroquinoline; (11 and 13) vinyl tris-(2-methoxyethoxy)-silane, clay, zinc oxide, lead dioxide and polymerized trimethyldihydroquinoline together with (4, 10 and 12) polyethylene.
