Abstract

855,132. Agglutinated fibrous materials. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 5, 1957 [March 5, 1956], No. 7257/57. Class 140. A strong, springy batting consists of a needled mat of staple fibres which are united at their points of contact by a bonding agent present in quantity amounting to 2 to 75% of the weight of the product and distributed throughout the batting so as to leave the same with an open porous structure. Specified fibres are cotton, rayon, nylon, polyacrylonitrile, linear polyesters, polymethanes, glass, polyaminotriazoles, and the acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate propionate or acetate, butyrate of cellulose. The fibres may be crimped. The batting may be formed by means of a batting card or by suspending the fibres in a stream of air or water and depositing them therefrom on to a foraminous member, after which the batting is passed through a needle loom. Specified bonding agents are solutions or emulsions of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyesters and rubbers in water or any liquid that is inert to the staple fibres. The bonding agent may be applied by immersion and the batting is then dried e.g. by hot air.
