Abstract

In a process for the production of a non-woven bonded fibrous material a web containing a major proportion of non-plasticisable fibres, a minor proportion of plasticisable fibres and a plasticiser for these fibres is heated, without pressure, to a temperature at which the fibrous structure of the plasticisable fibres is destroyed so that the material thereof coalesces into beads and acts as a bonding agent for the non-plasticisable fibres which remain undamaged at the temperature to which heating takes place. The amount of plasticiser added is controlled to ensure that the melting temperature of the binder fibres is sufficiently lowered to prevent damage occurring to the non-plasticisable fibres. Suitable plasticisable fibres referred to include polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with another monomer, such as vinyl acetate, and such fibres may advantageously be present in a proportion of 10% to 35% by weight. Non-plasticisable fibres referred to include regenerated-cellulose rayon, cotton and wool. Plasticisers referred to include N-butyl-benzenesulphonamide and trichloroethyl phosphate and these are preferably added to the fibres after formation of the mixed fibre fleece. The bonded webs produced may be further treated e.g. to render them less inflammable, hydrophobic, crease-resistant, stiffer or more resilient. In Example 4 an impregnant comprising 50 parts polyvinyl chloride, 20 parts antimony trioxide, 200 parts methylene chloride and 700 parts trichlorethylene is used to render a bonded web less inflammable.ALSO:In a process for the production of a coated non-woven bonded fibrous material a web containing a major proportion of non-plasticisable fibres, a minor proportion of plasticisable fibres and a plasticiser for these fibres is heated, without pressure, to a temperature at which the fibrous structure of the plasticisable fibre is destroyed so that the material thereof coalesces into beads and acts as a bonding agent for the non-plasticisable fibres which remain undamaged at the temperature to which heating takes place and coating the bonded material with a foam of a polyvinyl chloride dispersion. Plasticisers referred to include N - butyl - benzenesulphonamide and trichloroethyl phosphate and these are preferably added to the fibres after formation of the mixed fibre fleece.
