Abstract

594,844. Compound sheet materials. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. July 2, 1945, No. 16791. Convention date, July 7, 1944. [Class 140] Heat-insulating compound sheet material suitable for sleeping bags or quilts consists of a batting of loosely matted staple fibres of a thermoplastic material provided on one or both sides with a facing of textile fabric or other flexible sheet material, the facing or facings and the fibres of the batting being adhesively secured to one another at a series of small areas spaced throughout the area of the composite material due to the application of a solvent or softening agent for the thermoplastic material over said small areas. The facing may be a fabric or film of thermoplastic or non-thermoplastic material, e.g. regenerated cellulose, a cellulose ester or ether, or a woven fabric of cotton, linen, silk or wool. The thermoplastic fibres, which may be crimped, may be of cellulose acetate or other ester, or of a cellulose ether, a polyvinyl compound, or nylon. Solvents or softening liquids suitable for use with cellulose acetate are acetone or ethylene dichloride, which may be mixed with ethyl or methyl alcohol, methyl chloride with methyl or ethyl alcohol, and chloroform. The solvent may be applied by a pointed instrument hollowed to form a reservoir for the solvent, which may be used to pierce all the assembled layers at spaced points, or to score the outer fabric layers at spaced lines, discharging sufficient solvent to dissolve or soften some of the staple fibres and unit the layers. Specification 582,006 is referred to.
