Abstract

A coating composition comprises a graft polymer of a vinyl monomer and a natural or synthetic rubber. The graft polymer may be formed from a vinyl ester, vinylidene compound, alkyl methacrylate or acrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, vinyl pyridine or styrene and a rubber in the form of a latex or aqueous dispersion, e.g. natural rubber, polybutadiene, or a copolymer of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or methylisopropenyl ketone. The graft polymer may be prepared by polymerization initiated by a benzoyl peroxide/polyamine, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide/polyamine or a cumene hydroperoxide/polyamine, e.g. tetraethylene pentamine or ethylene diamine, system, or ionizing radiation. In Example II the graft polymer is produced in the presence of casein.ALSO:A coating for a surface consisting at least in part of a natural or synthetic rubber composition comprises an interlayer of a composition of a graft polymer of a vinyl monomer and a natural or synthetic rubber and an outer layer of an aqueous polymeric composition. The outer layer may be an acrylic polymer composition or a nitrocellulose composition. The graft polymer may be formed from a vinyl ester, vinylidene compound, alkyl methacrylate or acrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, vinyl pyridine or styrene, and a rubber in the form of a latex or an aqueous dispersion, e.g. natural rubber, polybutadiene or a copolymer of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or methylisopropenyl ketone. The acrylic polymer composition may comprise a polymer of methyl methacrylate with one or more different monomers, e.g. ethyl acrylate, or a terpolymer of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, and butyl hexyl acrylate or methacrylic acid. The surface may be that of a leather-like sheet material or a textile web such as a consolidated mat of interpenetrated crimped continuous fibres, e.g. nylon, which may have a layer of nonwoven staple fibres, e.g. of polypropylene, needled on to at least one surface, or a woven fabric bonded to one surface and a surface layer of resinous or elastomeric composition on the surface remote from the mat, bonded or reinforced with natural or synthetic rubber composition, e.g. polyurethane rubber, butyl rubber, polychloroprene, and copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile. The graft polymer may be prepared by polymerisation initiated by a benzoyl peroxide/polyamine, a tertiary butyl hydroperoxide/polyamine system, a cumene hydroperoxide/polyamine, e.g. tetraethylene pentamine or ethylene diamine, system, or ionizing radiation.
