Abstract
854,076. Grinding. MACKENZIE & A. N. PORTER Ltd., J. G., [trading as BROADWAY (BRISTOL) ENGINEERING CO.]. July 8, 1959 [July 10, 1958], No. 22182/58. Class 60. A rotary grinding attachment for securing to the body of an existing reciprocable surface grinding machine comprises a housing 2, a power-driven spindle 7 rotatably mounted therein, a work-table 15 secured to the spindle for receiving a work-holding chuck and means 30 for readily securing the housing to the body of the machine. The table 15 has concentric annular grooves 16 in its upper face to engage corresponding ribs on the underface of a chuck and a series of holding screws 17 around its periphery. The spindle 7 is supported by a main thrust bearing 6 but the table 15 is supported by an annular face 19 which forms a subsidiary thrust bearing directly beneath the point of application of pressure from a grinding wheel 18. Grooves 19a are formed in this surface to reduce friction and to aid lubrication which is further facilitated by a spring-loaded roller 20 which is urged into contact with the bearing surface 21 of the table 15, the roller 20 being partly increased in an oil bath 26 formed in the housing portion 5 and supplied by an oil reservoir 27a. Lubricant is also supplied to the spindle bearings 6 and 8 via leads 31. The clearance between the annular bearing surfaces 19 and 21 may be adjusted, to maintain the oil film between them, by means of an interchangeable accurately ground ring 28 of hardened steel. The table 15 as described with reference to the Figure accompanying the Provisional Specification may carry a circular plate located by a second, inner, concentric groove in its upper face to form a centring device for a magnetic chuck.
