882,654. Bearings. BRITISH NORTHROP Ltd. May 10, 1958, No. 15060/58. Class 12 (1). The front and rear bearings 11, 12 for the spindle 10 of a grinding-wheel 15 have bores 30, 40 respectively, each of which has a sector of its bearing surface, i.e. the surface opposite to a workpiece when in position, which is smooth, the remainder of the bearing surfaces being provided respectively with a series of recesses 31, 41 joined by grooves 32, 42. The recesses 31, 42, machined as arcs of circles, the centres of which are slightly offset from the axis of the bearing, subtend an angle of about 150 degrees. When the grinding-wheel is rotated a pump 27 delivers oil to two reservoirs 33, 43 formed respectively in the bearings 12, 11 which have slots 45 and passages 35 communicating respectively with grooves 36, 46 in a spindle housing 13 for the return of excess lubricant. The front bearing 11 has a tapered bore for a correspondingly tapered portion 14 on the shaft 10, the latter carrying a grinding-wheel 15 and a driven pulley 16 respectively at its front and rear ends. A ball bearing 18 and a pressure plate 19 are housed in a circular recess 17 in the rear bearing 12, the pressure plate 19 being urged toward the rear end of the spindle so that the tapered portion 14 of the spindle seats properly in the bearing 11.
