Abstract

1343518 Bearings IFIELD LABORATORIES PTY Ltd 23 Nov 1971 [30 Nov 1970] 54318/71 Heading F2A A hydrostatic bearing for a spherical journal 2 comprises at least one slipper 4 located in a housing, each slipper having a part spherical bearing surface for engaging the journal. The bearing surface of the slipper has a central recess or has grooves in its surface so as to define a sealing land 3 around the periphery of the surface. A duct 8 through the slipper conducts pressurized fluid from a chamber to the recess or the grooves in order to form the hydrostatic bearing film. Fluid is supplied to the chamber via a duct 9 in the housing. The slipper is movable in the chamber in a direction radial of the shaft and forces on the slipper are balanced by making the area of the surface of the slipper in the chamber equal to that of the sealing land. The slipper may be preloaded by a spring 7. The pressure of fluid supplied to the chamber may be varied according to the radial position of the slipper by connecting the slipper to a valve member (12, Fig. 3, not shown) which varies the supply of fluid through the duct 9. Alternatively, the valve member may be integral with the slipper (Fig. 4, not shown). The pressure of fluid supplied to a plurality of slippers may be controlled by the valve member of one slipper (Fig. 6, not shown).
