[Class 60] In a surface-grinding machine having a vertically adjustable headstock b, the grinding- wheel d is carried by a spindle mounting c disposed in bearings y, h in the headstock, the wheel being mounted on a spindle q running in ball or other bearings in the mounting c. The bearing g fits the mounting c accurately, whereas the bearing h has a clearance, the mounting being located accurately by a ring i aligned with the bearing g and secured to the headstock b, and studs carried by radial holes in the ring i are pressed by screws to grip the mounting. Axial movement of the mounting is prevented by a block k on the ring projecting into a recess in the mounting c. The ring i may have a hub of cylindrical or conical shape engaging the bore of the headstock, and the block k may be mounted on the headstock or at the rear bearing g. The ring i carries a hood r for the wheel d, and the spindle may be driven directly by an electric motor f.
