Trueing rotating tools. - A grinding-machine comprises a grinding-wheel 28, Fig. 1, mounted in bearings on a slide 66 adjustable crosswise on a carriage 23, which is traversed on slides 21, 22 by means of a screw 29 engaging a nut 30 on the carriage. The screw is rotated by a shaft 33, through the engagement of a clutch 36 thereon with either a clutch 37 or 38. Reversal of the carriage is caused by a lug 45 thereon engaging a tappet 46 or 47 on a bar 48, which selectively operates the clutches; these can also be operated by hand. The work 16 is mounted between a headstock 12 and a tailstock 14, and is driven from a pulley 19. Alternatively, the work, instead of the grinding-wheel, can be mounted on a reciprocating carriage. A trueing- device comprises an abrading part 75, Figs. 1 and 6, clamped between washers on a spindle 76, which runs in a split bush 78 fitted in a conical sleeve 77. A nut 82 on the bush takes up wear therein. The spindle 76 is driven from the armature shaft 98 of an electric motor through a dog clutch 104, which prevents axial vibration from being transmitted to the spindle 76. A bearing- ring 85, surrounding the sleeve 77, is provided with a stem 87, Fig. 1, secured by a set-screw 90 to a fitting on the tailstock. Alternatively, the abrading part is a hollow pencil 201, Fig. 10, a frusto-conical end of which contacts with the grinding-wheel 28. The pencil is held in a chuck 208 mounted on a spindle, which is carried by radial and end-thrust ball bearings in a barrel 206 and is connected to the armature shaft of an electric motor by a telescopic joint. The traverse of the grinding-wheel carriage or, alternatively, the work carriage causes the grinding- wheel to contact selectively with the work and with the trueing-device.
