[Class 60] A surface grinding machine comprises a hollow bearing body 1 integral with a standard 2 carrying a motor, the bore of the body 1 carrying a bearing bush 4 with sleeves 5 therein to receive a horizontal axle 3 carrying a grinding-wheel 12 and coupled at 7, 8 to the motor. A wheel guard 11 is held on the body 1 by a screw 10. In order to mount a grinding-wheel running on a vertical axis on the body, the guard 11 and the bush 4 and the parts carried thereby are removed and a chuck having at right-angles thereto a casing carrying a grinding-wheel is mounted on the body 1 ; a screw 16, which engages a notch 24 in the neck 9 of the wheel guard or a similar notch in the chuck, serves to locate these. The vertical spindle is driven by a cord passing from pulley 19 over guide pulleys to a pulley on the spindle.
