w. F. YUNG SANDING AND POLISHING ATTACHMENT FOR LATHES Filed July 27. 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 2' HIS ATTORNEYS Patented June 14, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SANDING AND POLISHING ATTACHMENT FOR LATHES Y 1 Claim.
This invention relates to sanding or polishing attachments for lathes and similar devices and has for the primary object the provision of a simple, eifrcient and inexpensive device of this character which may be readily adapted to a lathe whereby work finished by said lathe may be easily and quickly polished to remove tool grooves or markings or other irregularities therefrom.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. 7
For a complete understanding of my invention,
reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a sanding or polishing device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is an end elevation illustrating the device.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the means of mounting thesupporting arm for the sanding or polishing medium.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating the means for adjusting the arm to take up slack in the sanding or polishing medium.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view illustrating the connection between thearm and its supporting bracket whereby the arm may be adjusted on the bracket.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the nu- 5 meral I indicates a base having secured thereto a fitting 2 adapted for connecting the base I to a. tool post holder of a lathe or similar device. The
base carries an electric motor 3 adjacent one end thereof and the opposite end of the base carries a journal 4 rotatably supporting a shaft 5. Secured to the shaft 5 is a pulley 6. Said pulley is connected to a pulley l secured to the electric motor by an endless belt 8. Also secured to the 5 shaft 5 is a drum 9 over which is trained an endless sanding or polishing medium or belt ID, the latter also being trained over a drum H journaled to the forked end. 12 of an arm IS. The arm has an enlargement l4 provided with spaced slots I6 10 through which extend stud bolts H. The bolts I! are threaded to a bracket l8 and the latter is journaled on the shaft 5 so that said arm may be raised and lowered with respect to the base to engage and disengage the sanding or polishing 15 medium with the work on the lathe for the purpose of removing tool grooves or markings or any other irregularities that may be on the work.
A device of the character. described may be easily adapted to a lathe and may be employed 20 for polishing or sanding various kinds of work finished by the lathe and being secured to the tool post holder of the lathe, said device may be moved towards and from the work by the usual adjusting of the tool post of the lathe.
Having described the invention, I claim:
'An attachment for lathes comprising a base, a fitting secured to the base for securing the latter on a tool post holder of a lathe, a shaft journaled on said base, power means carried by the 30 base, means connecting said power means to the shaft, a. bracket journaled on said shaft, an arm adjustably secured to said bracket, spaced drums and one of said drums journaled on one end of said arm and the other drum secured on the shaft, and an endless polishing and sanding medium trained over the drums.
WILLIAM F. YUNG.
