Abstract

852,556. Inflatable life-raft. R. F. D. CO. Ltd., and PHILLIPS, R. J. April 24, 1959 [May 2, 1958], No. 14101/58. Classes 113 and 115. An inflatable life-raft which is adapted to be suspended in the upright position has straps 16 to impart rigidity for it to retain its shape when boarded in this position. The straps 16 extend inside the double skin capopy 14 and 15 from load spreading piece 18, attached to the raft gunwale 11, 12 to the centre of the top of the strut 13 where they are coupled to the shackle 17. To stabilize the life-raft when it is swung outboard from a ships side an apron 26 is secured to the lower side of the gunwale and joined to cleats 30 on the ships deck by lines 29, the apron 26 also serves as an aid to boarding in an emergency. In the embodiment described a further set of straps 22 are fitted inside the raft and arranged so that when the raft is loaded, the load is taken on the straps 16 slightly before the straps 22 are tensioned. The inner straps 22 may be replaced by the strut 13 adapted to act as a tension member. The life-raft may be of any shape.
