Abstract

973,180. Inflatable craft and launching same. P. FRANKENSTEIN & SONS (MANCHESTER) Ltd. Oct. 15, 1963 [Oct. 16, 1962], No. 39040/62. Headings B7A and B7S. An inflatable liferaft comprising a flexible impermeable floor 7 and canopy 14 both marginally united to an inflatable tubular gunwale 5 and adapted for lowering by means of a single fall 19 in inflated condition, has an oval plan form with opposed ports of its gunwale united by a inflatable tubular thwart 8 and two inflatable tubular arches 9 which are connected by longitudinal tubes 10 at opposite sides of the raft's centre-line, said tubes defining the upper edges of closable entrance openings 15 in the canopy 14 supported by this inflatable superstructure, which also assists the tubular thwart 8 to brace the raft against the pull of suspension bridles 20, 24 extending to its floor and gunwale. Initially the raft stowed in its valise from which the shackle 21 projects is carried to its launching position by the guard-rail 30 and is tied to deck cleats 34 by bowsing lines 33 attached to the gunwale and projecting from the valise. The raft is inflated automatically from compressed gas bottle 11 in the usual manner, and when loaded is lowered automatically from the slewing davit 28 under gravity at a speed controlled by a centrifugal brake. When the raft becomes fully waterborne the fall hook 31 automatically releases the shackle 21.
