Abstract

529,113. Canoes &c. DU PRE, H. E. May 22, 1939, No. 15156. [Class 113 (ii)] A canoe or like normally open small watercraft d is provided with a separate and removable lining attachment a of canvas or other waterproof flexible fabric the margins b of which are tightly connected to the gunwale or coaming c forming a cockpit for passengers and enclosing between it and the hull a substantially airtight and watertight buoyancy chamber. The margins b may be formed with a hem b<1> containing a draw-cord b<2>, and the hem may engage, in a groove or beneath a beading formed on the outer surface of the coaming. Alternatively, or in addition, spring clips e may be employed. In one modification the margins b are reinforced by flexible slats g riveted to or separate from the lining a and secured to the coaming c by bolts g<1> and wing nuts g<2>. These bolts may hold in position one or more cross-pieces f of webbing, canvas, or the like forming back-rests. Other modifications include the use of press-stud fastenings. The lining may be elongated at a<1> to extend under the fore deck and it may be bifurcated to lie on opposite sides of a mast.
