Abstract

852,194. Furnace flue dampers. WARTENBERG, F. Feb. 26, 1959 [March 28, 1958], No: 10080/58. Class 51 (1). A damper for a furnace flue comprises plates 1, 2 spaced apart in the direction of flow in the flue by a U-frame 3. The damper is enclosed in a casing 8 when open, .operating cables 9 passing through stuffing-boxes 10 presenting larger openings than the cables. Coupling members 11 are a close fit in the stuffing-boxes so that the casing 8 is airtight unless the damper is fully closed. Air entering round the cables 9 when the damper is closed passes into the damper casing round the frame 3. Tongues 7 and sloping shoulders 6 on the frame 3 guide the damper as it opens so that the plates 1, 2 and frame 3 co-operate with tongues 7 to form an airtight joint. In a modification, Fig. 4, a single damper plate 21 has forked ends, and tongues 27, 28 and 24 close the top of the damper casing. In another embodiment, Figs. 7, 8, circular damper plates arranged to cooperate with flanges 37, 38 of different widths are mounted on a hollow axle. Slots in the axle co-operate with slots 40 in the bearing 39 to admit air to the space between the plates through slots in the axle. In the arrangement of Fig. 9, a solid axle 41 carries a disc 49 with ports 50, 51 to control passages 46, 47 extending through the frame 48 between the seating flanges.
