Abstract

600,967. Slide valves. YOUNGHUSBAND, K., and SUMMERS & SONS, Ltd., J. Oct. 6, 1945, No. 26099. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] A reversing valve for controlling the flow of gases in a furnace regenerator comprises slidable plate dampers 8, 9, Fig. 1, disposed for alternate movement in a frame assembly 4, 6 on intersecting paths located within the valve casing 23 having ports 1, 2, 3. The upper ends of the dampers are attached to a cable 10 which passes over guide pulleys 12, 13 and is wound around a winch-drum 14 driven by an electric motor and located on the casing. The plates, which descend by gravity are raised by the winch. The dampers and the frame may be water-cooled and an air inlet valve 20, Fig. 2, provided. In operation, when the damper 9 is in its closed position, gas passes from the port 3 to the flue port 2, whilst air entering through the valve 20 passes through the port 1. When the damper 8 is in its closed position gas passes from the port 1 to the port 2, and the port 3 is open to the air. In a modification, gas is directed from either of two oppositely located lateral flues to a central exhaust port.
