Abstract

314,171. Woodall-Duckham (1920), Ltd., and McEwan, M. H. April 28, 1928. Regenerators; valves, reversing. -In furnaces such as coke ovens adapted to be fired by rich gas or lean gas the regenerators are supplied with air or lean gas by apparatus comprising a box or casing 1 having valves 12, 15 communicating with a source of air and a source of lean gas respectively and a valve 5 communicating with the regenerator. The valve 5 is adapted to close an opening in a partition 2 separating the inlet compartment 4 of the box 1 from a compartment 3 open to the regenerator through a duct 6 and communicating through a valve 8 with the waste gas flue 7, which has a damper 9. The valves 5. 8 are interconnected and reversed at intervals and the sliding valve 12, which places the box 1 in communication with the atmosphere when rich gas is being used in the furnace, is operated by a handle 13 having a reduced portion 24 over which, when the valve is shut, takes a slot 21 of a slide 20 movable by a handle 27 so that when the slide 20 is moved to the left the air valve cannot be opened. In this position of the slide 20 an enlarged part 26 of a slot 22 in the slide registers with the stem 17 of the screwdown gas valve 15 operated by a handle 16 so that the gas valve can be opened. When the gas valve is opened a reduced portion 25 of the stem 17 leaves the plane of the slide 20 so that the slide cannot then be moved to the right to allow the air valve 12 to be opened. The reversing mechanism is actuated by a lever 30 pivoted at 31 and connected to the reversing rope or rod 33 common to a number of regenerators. The waste gas valve 8 is suspended by a chain 34 from a quadrant 35 integral with the lever 30 and the inlet valve 5 is suspended by a chain 36 from a quadrant 37 freely rotatable on a shaft 39, which is itself rotated by the lever 30 through a link 40 and arm 41. After the waste gas valve 8 has been closed, but before the lever 30 reaches the end of its travel, a, boss 42 on the link 40 strikes an arm 43 connected by members 45, 47, 46 with the quadrant 37 thus opening the inlet valve 5. The time interval between the closing of the waste gas valve and the opening of the inlet valve 5 may be varied by adjusting the position of the boss 42 on the link 40 When air is being preheated this time interval is lessened by directly clutching the shaft 39 to the quadrant 37 by a member 50 slidably keyed to the shaft 39 and having a stud 53 adapted to enter a slot 52 in a plate 51 secured to the quadrant 37. The length of the slot 52 is such that the quadrant is operated by the member 50 before the boss 42 strikes the arm 43. The clutch is controlled by the locking slide 20, which carries a rod 61 having an arm 63 mounted rotatably on the clutch member 50 so that movement of the slide 20 into the position permitting opening of the air valve 12 closes the clutch, and movement of the slide into the other position opens the clutch.
