Abstract
732,262. Furnace regenerators. ERP, M. VAN. Oct. 27, 1952 [Oct. 27, 1951], No. 26962/52. Class 64 (1). In a regenerative furnace having two air regenerators each connected by a passage 6 or 7 to reversing apparatus, and two fuel gas regenerators similarly connected, each passage 6 or 7 leads to a pair of ports 1, 2 or 3, 4, and a port 5 leading to a chimney flue is located between the pairs. Reversing caps 21, 22 and 23, 24 simultaneously open one port and close the other in each pair, and each port in one pair is connected by a hood 26 or an air or gas manifold 29 to the port in the other pair that is in the opposite state (open or closed) at the same time. The ports 1-5 are surrounded by a tank 20 containing water into which dip the lower edge of the hood 26 and the lower edges of the branches 27, 28 from the air or gas manifold 29. The caps 21, 22 and 23, 24 are connected together by arcuate bridge-pieces 35 which rest on rollers 38. The caps and their bridge-pieces can be pivotally moved about horizontal axes, by means of an electric motor 55 driving gearing and a linkage. A damper 25 in the port 5 is adjustable to control the flow of flue gas, and is closed before reversal of the air or fuel gas flow. A damper 31 operated by mechanism sensitive to the difference in air or gas pressure on opposite sides of an apertured diaphragm 32 controls the air supply. The fuel gas reversing apparatus also has a cap similar to the caps 21- 24 and similarly mounted and operated, to close the passage to the chimney flue during reversal.
