Abstract

849,784. Sewing machines. SINGER MANU FACTURING CO. April 14, 1958 [May 22 1957], No. 11719/58. Class 112 Frames. A sewing machine has an L-shaped work arm comprising a first limb 21 joined at one end to the supporting base 11 of the machine and a second limb 22 joined to the other end, stitching being carried out at a point on the second limb adjacent the junction of the limbs. This arrangement of the bed permits the use of the machine as a feed-along-the-arm machine when tubular articles are fed along the limb 22 and round on to limb 21, and as a feed across the arm machine when tubular articles of relatively large diameter are slipped over both the short and the long limb. A recess 72, at the juncture of the limbs, extends across the line of stitching to permit a fabric tube of small diameter to be crowded on to the outward edge of the limb 22 with its axis parallel to that of the limb 21. Stitching may then be applied around the tube transversely of its longitudinal axis. An opening 70 having a cover (not shown) is provided in the underside of the limb 21 to allow access to mechanism contained therein. Feed-bar mechanism, regulating and reversing. A feed bar 43 carries at one end a feed dog 40 and has upstanding arms 53 pivoted on a pin 54 secured between the ends of rock arms 55 formed on a feed advance shaft 56. This shaft is oscillated by a pitman 61 connected at its lower end to an arm 60 on the feed advance shaft, the upper bifurcated end of the pitman embracing a feed advance cam on the main shaft. A slide block pivoted to the pitman intermediate its ends engages a guide slot in a stitch-length regulating member pivoted to the standard of the machine. The angular position of the regulating member determines the direction and the magnitude of the feed advance motion of the bar, and may be varied by the handle 69. The feed bar is also connected by an upstanding link 44 to the end of a feed lift rock arm 45 fast on a pivoted feed lift rock frame 46. A rock arm 50 on the frame is connected to the lower end of a feed lift pitman 51, the upper end of which embraces a feed lift eccentric on the main shaft. Stitch-forming, connecting upper and lower rotary shafts. A rotary hook is housed within the free end of the limb 22 and comprises a loop-taker body 23 fast on a vertical shaft 25 driven from a shaft 28 by bevel gears 26, 27. The shaft 28 is driven from a bedshaft 31 journalled lengthwise of the limb 21 and operatively connected to the main shaft (not shown) in the arm of the machine by bevel gears 32, 33 and an upwardly inclined shaft 34.
