New ork, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain- 'Stltch Sewing-Machines, of which the follow ing is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Another object is to provide a machine of the type referred to in whichthe work shall be fed off the horn or bed-plateinstead of on v to the same, as is usualinmachines in which the feedworks longitudinally of the bedplate.
The present machine-is desi ned particu larly for sewing the overla pecl longitudinal edges of tubularly-arrange work, such as the legs of trousers, overalls, or the like or the sleeves or bodies of shirts, &c., the bed, late being so arranged that the work'is fed 0 the same, the rear end being arranged at the front of the machine and adjacent the o erator and the framework of the machine ein so constructed as to leave an-um'nterrupte space in which thehands of the operator may work toaproper'ly manipulate the material to be seWe The invention consists in the various matters, all as hereinafter described and referred I to in the appended claims.

At the left-hand end of the case member A rises the hollow post A, from the upper end of which pro'ects the rearwardly-extending cylindrical edlate or horn A, parallel with the case memer A, but in a hi her lane. The rear end of the bed-plate A has a removable end cap A which incloses the two loo'pers and the feed-dog to be presently described.

Thefeed-bar F is pivotally connected at its rear or far end to verticallydisposed links f f, pivoted at their lower ends in the lower portionof the bedeplate or horn A ,'and the near or front end of the feed-barthat is, the end nearest the opera/ toris pivotally connected to the upper forked end f 2 of the main lever F the lower end of said lever being strapped to the larger eccentric d on shaft D. The lever F is further acted upon by the auxiliary lever F forked at its lower end f to straddle the smaller eccentric d of shaft D and split thereabove; as at f", and having a tightening-screw f to regulate the space between justably inan inclined vertically-disposed slot a in the post A (See Fig. 4.) By adjusting this bolt f 6 the throw ofthe feed-bar may be lengthened or shortenedto vary the stitch. It will be seen that the main lever F effects the raising and lowering of the front end of the feed-bar and also raises the lever F and that in the further rotation of the ec-. centrics d? d the auxiliary lever F will be rocked on its-axis f, so as to rock the main lever and impart the necessary longitudinal movement to the feed-bar F. The auxiliary lever F therefore forms a sliding and oscillating axis for the lever F L is the looper-shaft, mounted to slide and rock in the bearing-blocks f f below the feedbar F and provided at its far or rear end with two loopers Z Z, whichcoact in the ordinary manner with the two needles to form parallel rows of stitches. It will be seen that as the lower end of lever L is carried around by the wrist-pin (1 its upper end will rock the looper-sh-af-t and also oscillate on lDlTB ball Z, and so reciprocate the loo ershaft. .The take-up mechanism for the lower threads comprises the grooved-cam H, the throw-off arm h, retaining-arm h and guides h 713, .as in the well-known Union Special machine. The intermittent stop device, comprising upper and lower springs I I, the lower one of which is closed against the upper by a cam I is also the same as in said machine.
The lower threads pass from the spools through the tension devices T,at the righthand end of the gooseneck, thence forwardly through the inclined tube U to the tube U on the u per edge of the front wall of the casing mem er A thence through the two eyes in a guide U just in advance of the nippersprings, and then between said springs to the take-up mechanism, from which the threads pass. upwardly out of the casing A through the vertically-extending tube U into the cylindrical bed or horn A, where they pass rear- .wardly through guide-apertures in the bearin -blocks f f (see Fig.2) to the loopers H.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sewing-machine comprising a standard, a,horizontal member projecting therefrom, a vertical member rejecting from said horizontal member, a riving-shaft, and a line-shaft journaled in the horizontal member and operatively connected with the driving-shaft, a feeding mechanism comprising a main feed-operating lever arranged within said vertical member, and operatively connected at its lower end with said shaft, an
auxiliary lever pivoted at its upper end to the main feed-operating lever, and at its lower end operatively connected to said shaft, and a looper-operating lever also arran ed within said vertical member; substantialfy as described.
2. A sewing-machine, comprisin a casing or framework, a driving-shaft journa ed therein, said casing having. a horizontal and a vertical member, and a line-shaft journaled in the horizontal member and operatively IIO ' at itslower end with said line-shaft, an auxconnected with the driving shaft,'a main feed-operatin lever, arranged within said vertical mem er, and operatively connected iliary lever pivoted at its upper end to'the main feed operati'ng lever, and at-rits lower end operatively connected to said line-shaft, a looper-support and a looper-operating lever connected at its lower end also to said line-shaft; and at its upper end to the loopersupport, said auxilia erating' lever bein so located within the vertical member 0 the casing or framework, substantially as described.

A sewing-machine, comprising a casing or framework having a horizontal and a vertical member, and a shaftjournaled in the horizontal member, a feeding mechanism, comprising a main feed operating lever operatively connected at its lower end to the said shaft, an auxiliary lever slidingly pivoted between its ends to the vertical member, pivoted at its upper end to the main feed-operating lever, and at its lower end operatively connected to said shaft, a looper-shaft at the upperend of the vertical member, and a looper-operating lever connected at its lower end to said shaft, and at its upper. end pivotally connected to the looper-supporting shaft; substantially as described.
