Portable sewing-machines, closing filled sacks.-In a portable sewing- machine especially intended for closing the mouths of filled sacks and also adapted to be used in any position, such as in upholstery work, the portion 2 of the machine body joining the ends carrying the needle and the throat - plate respectively is formed as a carrying handle, and the driving motor is carried in a satchel across the back of the operator. Driving.-The motor is connected by a flexible drive 5 to a worm 17 mounted in the machine frame with its axis of rotation parallel to the line of feed, the worm meshing with a worm-wheel 16 carried by a shaft 15. Work-feeding; work-holding.-A feed dog 8 is carried by a member 20 having a portion which is drawn by a spring 30 into engagement with a cam disc 18 mounted on shaft 15, and a crankpin 19 carried by cam 18 is connected by a link 21 to one end of a lever 22, the other end of which is pivoted to the member 20. A presser foot 7 is pivoted at 11 to a presser bar 12. The work-plate 13 has a downwardly-sloping forward portion 13a which makes an angle with the presser foot. No provision is made for raising the latter, and the arrangement is such that the feed dog, after performing its feeding stroke, moves forwardly and downwardly so as to lie substantially parallel to the sloping portion 13a, when work may be inserted in the machine. The feed dog subsequently pivots upwardly to engage the work and then moves rearwardly to feed it. Stitch forming.-A cam 23 mounted on shaft 15 imparts oscillatory movement to a looper 14 which co-operates with the needle 9 in the formation of chain stitches. A connecting-rod 24 is pivoted to a crank-pin mounted on the wormwheel 16 and is also pivoted to a crank 25 carried by a shaft 27, the other end of the latter carrying a crank 26 which is pivotally connected to the needle bar 10 for driving it. Spool holders.-A spool 28 rests on a bracket 29 and is secured in position by a nut 31 screwed on the end of a spindle 32 which passes through the spool.
