[Class 112] Filled sacks, closing.-A sack-sewing machine of the kind comprising a U-shaped housing 14, Fig. 1, for the mechanism, the work passing between the limbs of the housing, is provided with an electric driving motor 20 and with a handle 17 by which the machine may be carried in one hand while work is guided through it by the other hand. In the embodiment shown the handle is tubular for the passage of electric leads to a switch 32 arranged in the end of it. The presser-bar 58, Fig. 7, is spring-pressed, and carries a bracket 61 for engagement by the end of a lifting lever 64, the other end of which is placed close to the handle as shown in Fig. 1. A guard 68 protects the needle-bar 43, and a smaller guard covers the presser-bar bracket 61 and the end of the lever 64. Chain-stitching; throat plates. - The machine has a single vertical belt-driven shaft 26, Fig. 1, in one limb of the housing, and the needle-bar 43, reciprocating horizontally at the lower end of the other limb, is actuated by a vertical lever in the latter limb connected to an eccentric on the shaft. The spool of twine Z is carried at one side of the top of the housing, and the twine passes to the needle through a tension device 51 and finally through an eye 47, Fig. 7, on the top of the needle-bar. The throat-plate has a lip extending beneath the looper to hold the loop of twine up for engagement by the looper; the needle-hole has a narrow lateral passage, the stitches passing through this into a countersunk bore parallel to the needle-hole and being drawn down to the work through this bore. Feed by dogs.-The feed dog is carried on a feed-bar 37, Fig. 7, which is supported at one end by a rocking frame 39 and has near the other end a square aperture fitting an eccentric on the shaft 26, this eccentric imparting both lift and feed movements to the feed-bar.
