In a glove sewing machine the work is gripped between a horizontal, intermittently rotated feed wheel 31 and a horizontal presser wheel 58 mounted upon a slidable support 12 spring-biassed towards wheel 31. Jaws 95 for a gripper needle 80 having an eye at one end are disposed above disc 58 and are mounted in a support 90 arranged to move linearly to and away from wheel 31 and to rotate about a vertical axis. A rotary looptaker 70 is mounted co-axially on wheel 58. Needle gripping jaws 85 and an associated holder 107 are disposed above wheel 31 similar to jaws 95 and holder 90. Associated with each wheel is a reciprocating needle bar 150. A presser foot 77 mounted upon support 12 and associated with wheel 58 co-operates with a fixed plate 75 associated with wheel 31. At the commencement of a seam, the needle is held in jaws 95 with its point directed towards the work and its eyed and engaged in the slotted end of a pin 160, Fig. 15 (not shown) associated with the needle bar 150. Holder 90 and bar 150 then move towards the work, when holder 90 stops and jaws 95 open, while bar 150 continues to move for parring needle 80 through the work and into the open jaws 85, which then close. Holder 107 then moves slightly towards the work for forming a vertical loop of needle thread which is then entered and expanded by the rotary looptaker 60 while holder 107 rotates through 180 degrees and moves away from the work. During this movement one arm of the expanded thread loop is engaged by a pivoted hook 271, Fig. 24 (not shown), on one end of a horizontal bar 270 fixed to a vertical shaft 250. Counter-clockwise rotation of the latter actuates hook 271 to draw a measured length of thread within a circular groove formed in a fixed horizontal plate 13. Finally the free arm of the thread loop which is held at bar 150 by a spring-biassed catch 162, is engaged by a hook and is drawn upwardly to set the stitch. The operations are then reversed when the needle is passed through the work into the jaws 95, the loop is taken by the member 70 and is further expanded by pivoted hook 272 on bar 270 which now rotates clockwise, the stitch being finally set by the upward movement of a hook.
