NEEDLE. APPLICATIONy FILED 00T. 23,1907.

v narran semanas earner The FREDERICK H. SCHOMBURG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
NEEDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 1li, 1910.
Application led October 23, 1907. Serial No. 398,797.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. SoHoMj- BURG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to thread retaining needles, and its object is the production of a needle in the head of which is formed an opening for the thread, which opening is narrowed to form a contracted wedgeshaped slot at one or both ends of the longitudinal axis of said opening, and in which -slot or slots the thread will be wedged in the operation of sewing, so as to securely hold the same when the thread is pulled through the material that is being sewed.
A further and important object of theinvention is to form the openings in the head of the needle without adding an extraneous element thereto.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows an enlarged elevation of a needle with my invention incorporated therein, Fig. 2 represents a partial section of Fig. 1 on the line 2, 2, Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of another form of the invention, and Fig. 4 shows a section of Fig. 3 on the line 4, 4.v
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the body of -a needle is represented at 10, which is of slightly larger diameter at about its central portion 11 than at its ends. In,the head 12 is formed an elongated eye 13 whose walls converge in one plane toward the end of the needle to produce a wedge-shaped slot 14 as best seen in Fig. 1. The roof 15 of this slot is struck on a convex curve as best seen in Fig. 2, and as the roof extends lengthwise of the apex of the slot it of course stands in a plane at right angles to that in which the Walls converge. Along the sides of the needle grooves 16, 17 extend from the opening 13 to form clearance spaces for the In Figs. 3 and 4 a double pointed needle is represented with the pointed ends 25, 26.
ody 27 of the needle is slightly 'larger in diameter at about its central portion 28, than at other parts thereof. In the head 29 is formed an elongated opening 30, having the wedged shaped slots 31, 32, at the ends thereof and parallel with the opening 30 andthe longitudinal axis of the needle.. The roofs 33, 34 of the slots are convex curves so as not to injure a thread 35 when secured therein. These roofs vstand in a plane at right angles to that in which the Walls of the wedge-shaped slots converge, the same as above described for the needle shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Grooves 37, 38 are formed on opposite sides of the slots 31, 32 to form clearance spaces for the thread 35.
The object of the two slots in the double pointed needle is to secure the thread in either one of said slots, should it become loose when the needle is forced through material in opposite directions. When the needle is always forced through the material in one direction, the form shown in Figs. l and 2 is used, the thread being caught in the slot 14 during the process of sewing, and which will evidently not become disengaged.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. The herein described needle provided with an elongated eye whereof the extremity has its walls converging in one plane to produce a wedge-shaped slot and the roof of said slot struck on a convex curve in a plane at right angles to said first plane, and longitudinal grooves on opposite sides of the needle extending across the ends of saidslot and roof. 4
2. The herein described needle provided with an elongated eye whereof each extremity has its walls converging in one plane to produce a wedge-shaped slot and the roof of said slot struck on a convex curve in a plane at right angles to said first plane, and longitudinal grooves on opposite sides of the needle each extending from a point beyond the end of the roof of one slot, into and past the eye, to a point beyond the end of the roof ofthe other slot.
Signed at the borough of Manhattan in the county f New York and State of New York this 21st day of October A. D. 1907.
FREDERICK Il. SCHOMBURG.
