UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
FRANK R. PARSONS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
MANUFACTURE OF COMBINED NEEDLE AND THREAD.
SPECIFICATION :forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,478. dated May 24, 1887.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. PARSONS, of the city and county of Providence, Stateof Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Combined Needles and Threads; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a description thereof.
This invention relates to the manufacture of combined needles and threads; and it consists in making the needle from a piece of stock having a flanged head, drawing up said head into the form of a cup or tube, inserting the thread or cord into such cup or tube, and compressing the cup or tube upon the thread or cord to secure the needle to the same, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 l'epresents, on an enlarged scale, a blank from which the needle may be 1nade. Fig. 2 shows the blank with its flanged head drawn up into a cup or tube to receive the thread, and also a View of the thread or cord. Fig. 3 represents the needle secured to the thread or oord. Fig. 4 shows the combined needle and thread in partial section.
The needle and thread which forms the subject of this invention is particularly adapted for sewing buttons upon boots and shoes, although it may be used for a large variety of purposes.
A represents an approved form of blank from which the needle A may be made, the said blank having a Iianged head, b, which is preferably integral with the shank b of the blank,
though the head may be secured to the shank in any preferred manner. The blank is preferably pointed at the end opposite the head, although the shank of the blank may be of the same size below the head throughout its length, andthe point be formed upon the shank at any time during the making of the needle.
By means of proper tools the flanged head b is drawn up into a cup or tube, b2, as shown at Fig. 2, of a size to allow the thread or cord C t0 be inserted therein. One end of the thread or cord is then passed into the cup or tube, b2, and said cup or tube is then compressed upon the thread or cord by proper tools, thereby securing the thread firmly to the needle, and preferably leaving the needle substantiall y the same sizethroughout its length above the pointsection.
The foregoing method of forming the needle and attaching the thread enables the combined article of a high grade to be made at little expense.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa FRANK R. PARSONS.
