Description

No. 238,523. Patented March 8,1881.

UNTTEE STATES PATENT OTTT E.
GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
COMBINED BUTTON AND FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,523, dated March 8," 1881.
Application filed December 2, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PRENTIGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Buttons and Fastening Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined buttons and fastening devices, whereby said buttons are attached to leather, cloth, or other fabric without the aid of sewing, as in the usual manner; and the invention consists, essentially, of an improved metallic connection having a central shank to receive the button-head, which is molded thereon during the process of manufacture, an intermediate neck portion adapted to receive an eyelet, and a connecting-plate provided with fasteningprongs bent at right angles thereto, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete device; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 detail views.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponrlin g parts.
Referrin g to the drawings, A represents the metallic connection, formed of round, halfround, or other suitable-shaped wire, bent into shape so as to form an eye or shank, a, which is adapted to receive a button -head, 11, composed of leather, paper-pulp, or other suitable material molded or formed thereon during the process of manufacture, said connection A being also formed with an intermediate neck, 0,
(N0 model.)
adapted to receive an eyelet, d, and with aconnecting plate or base, 0, provided with sharp penetrating prongs f, bent at right angles thereto, as shown.
It will be observed that by means of the spread shank co the button-head b is held closely thereon, and prevents the same from being pulled off by any ordinary means, while the rounded surface of the eyelet 61 serves the purpose not only of a neck where the button is used for wearing-apparel, but also enables the button to be used as a lacing-stud for boots and shoes, the tie passing around said eyelet under the button-head during the operation of lacing the boot or shoe. The interposition of the eyelet d between the button-head b and the connecting plate or base c serves the important and double purpose of keeping the button-head from twisting to one side, consequent upon the strain on the same when in use, and to prevent the wear upon the button-hole, as well as to obviate, to a great degree, the friction upon the tie when the device is used as a lacing-stud, thereby enabling the tie to last twice the ordinary length of time as when used around a stationary or fixed stud, as is the case with all other devices for a similar purpose.
The device thus constructed and arranged is adapted to be attached to the cloth or fabric by means of the settingprongs fin ama-nner well known, and in which two or more prongs may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- A solid leather, paper, or pulp button provided with the shank a, neck portion 0, eyelet d, and prongsf, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. PRENTIGE.
Witnesses:
