Description

0. A. RUSSELL. Fastening for Shoes, &0.
No. 219,982. Patented Sept 23,1879.
WITNESSES (I INVENTOR 7/ v M. [4 fliuwaw,
' I ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. RUSSELL, OF PLAINWELL, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR SHOES, 80c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,982, dated September 23,1879; application filed July 19, 1 879.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GHAELEs A. RUssELL, of Plainwell, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Fastenin gs for Shoes,
Gauntlets, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings are representations of detached views of my improved fastening; and Fig. 4 is a view of the same applied to a shoe.
This invention has relation to improvements in fastenings for shoes, gauntlets, and other articles.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letters A A designate the adjoining edges of that part of a shoe usually connected by a button-fastening. The part A has formed in it at a suitable distance apart transverse oblong slots i, extending through both the upper a and lining, at the ends of which are run seams; or they may be finished after the usual way of buttonholes.
B designates the fastener button or stud, formed of wire in a single piece by bending it in the form of an oblong loop, j, then carrying it up at right angles to-the plane of the said loop, and forming a pear-shaped loop, 1, the plane of which is at right angles to the plane of loop j. The free end of the wire is then bent outward in the plane of both loops, and forms a fastening tongue or point, 70. 'Loop I may have a head, Z, secured thereon, of metal, composition, rubber, or other suitable material, the form of which is preferably conical. This tongue is thrust through the part A of the shoe, or small holes may be made for its reception, and loop j, which is the base of the fastening-button, secured thereto bymeans of a few stitches, "n, at each end thereof.
The shoe is fastened by passing the slots 13 over the button-loop l and pressing down upon part A of the shoe. These loops or heads readily enter the slots or button-holes.
The base-loop has a broad bearing on the shoe, and consequently will not injure the foot of the wearer when an overshoe is worn.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The wire shoe-button consisting of an oblong base-1oop,j, the erect button-100p l, with or without the head I at right angles to the plane of the loop j, and having a reduced neck, and the fastening tongue or point It in the plane of the loop I, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. RUSSELL.
