A sewing machine for producing fancy stitching comprises a vertically-movable needle bar, a pair of needle holders mounted at the lower end of the needle bar for movement therewith and also for lateral movement, and a pair of elements each of which is coupled to a needle holder for effecting lateral movement thereof and to a patterngenerating device for controlling said lateral movement. A frame 11, Fig. 1, secured by screws 12 to a head 10, is formed with three spaced horizontal arms 11', 11", 111"'. A needle bar 13, slidable in arms 11", 111"' and coupled by a linkage 14 to the arm shaft 14', carries at its lower end a horizontal plate 15. A pair of needle holders 16a, 16b have upper plate portions each pivoted at one end under plate 15 and provided at the other end with a downwardly-extending socket for a respective needle 20a, 20b, and with a respective upwardly-extruding bracket 18a, 18b slidably engaging the upper surface of plate 15. The needles co-operate with a looper 22 rotating about a horizontal axis. Rods 25a, 25b, which pass through plate 15, have lower cranked ends engaged with the holders 16a, 16b, respectively, and cranked upper ends slidably but non-rotatably engaged with hollow shafts 23a, 23b which are journalled in arm 11' and are formed with respective cranks 23'd, 23'b coupled by respective rods 24a, 24b to separate pattern-generating means for oscillating the needle holders. In a modification (Fig. 7), adapted to co-operate with a vertical axis looptaker, the needle holders are pivoted to the needle bar about the axis thereof. In Fig. 8 a body 28, carried by the needle bar 27, is formed with a groove 28' located perpendicular to the direction of work feed. Two needle holders 29a, (29b) are slidable in groove 28 and are reciprocated by respective crank arms 31'a, (31'b) on oscillating shaft 31a (31b) journalled in an extension 28" of body 28.
