This invention relates to looper mechanism for glove and like sewing machines, adapted inter alia for attaching the thumb ortions to gloves, of the type having a wor -carry'- iug pillar within which oscillates an upright looper spindle.
l or the operations for which the machine is primarily intended there are employed twin needles confined to reciprocating movements in rectilinear paths and cooperating with a looper caused-to oscillate in a path comprising arcs on opposite sides of the needle paths, the looper spindle receiving, in addition to its oscillatory movements, vibratory movements in a vertcal plane perpendicular to the plane defined by the needles.
' To avoid play or lost motion, the bearing for the looper spindle is fitted to a rocker mounted beneath the machine bed plate, said rocker being formed at the end remote from the looper as a yoke to which is secured a lever bifurcated at both ends, said lever being housed within the standard. of the machine frame and embracing at its upper end an eccentric on the upper or needle-actuating shaft. 1
The looper spindle is of a length about half the length of the lever, so that, notwithstanding that only a minimum tilting movement is transmitted to the rocker, the required range of needle-avoiding movement is imparted to the looper.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation of the working parts of a sewing machine constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a corresponding elevation at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a corresponding inverted plan; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing the looper spindle and looper; Fig? 5 is a detail view of a lever constituting an element of mechanism for tilting the looper spindle; Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are detail views of the looper to an enlarged scale; Fig.- 9 is a plan of the work supporting pillar; Fig. 10 is a diagram illustrating in plan the needle paths and the path of the looper beak.
The machine shown comprises a frame of usual construction having a bed plate 1 hinged to one edge of a tray-like base 2, said base being formed integral with a receptacle 3 projecting from its forward edge adjacent to the stitch-forming mechanism. Journalled within the overhanging arm 7 of the machine frame is the main driving shaft 8 carrying at one end the usual band wheel 9 and at the opposite end the crank d sc 10 with crank pin 11 connected by a link 12 to a collar 13 adjustably clamped to the needle bar 14 carrying twin tln'eml-carrying needles 15 and journalled for vertical reciprocatory movements in the head of the machine arm 7.
The needles 15 cooperate with an oscillatory thread-carrying looper 16 supported by an upright looper spindle 17 substantially aligned with'the needles 15 and journaliod in a non-rotatable sleeve 1.8, said spindle 17 and sleeve 18 projecting upwardly through the bed plate 1.
The sleeve 18 is fitted tightly at its lower end in an aperture in a rocker 19 through which projects the spindle 17, the latter carrying at its lower end a pinion 20.
The parts of the spindle 17 and of the sleeve 18 above the bed plate 1 are enclosed within a divided tubular work-supporting" pillar 21 of which one half is formed with the throat plate 22 provided with a needle aperture 23.
The rocker 19 is formed as a rigid structure mounted on pintles 24 beneath the bed plate 1, and is formed at the end remote from the looper spindle 17 as a yoke to which is secured at spaced points, as by screws 25, 26 on opposite sides of one of the pintles 24, a lever 27 bifurcated at both ends. said lever 27 being housed within the standard of the machine frame and embracing at its upper end an eccentric 28 .on the main shaft 8, the axis of which is parallel to the pintles 24.
The screw 26 penetrates an elongated slot 29 in the lever 27. A screw 30 provides a position of the tor 35 jourualled on a'pivot 36 fixed to an arm of the rocker 19 and connected by a pitman 37 with a crank 38 on an upright shaft 39 housed within the standard of the machine frame and connected by mitre gears 40, ll, with the shaft 8, whence the spindle 17 derives oscillatory movements.

As will appear from the foregoing, the needles 15 are confined to movement in vertical paths, While the looper 16 oscillates in a path comprising arcs on opposite sides of the needle paths, as best seen in Fig. 10. To effect transition from one to the other of said arcs there are positively imparted to the looper spindle 17 vibratory movements in a vertical plane perpendicular to the plane defined bv the needles 15, said vibratory movements eing derived from the eccentric 28 acting on the lever 27, the movements of which latter are transmitted to the rocker 19.
What we claim is 1. A sewing machine having a frame com prising a bed, tubular work-supporting pillar and overhanging bracket-arm members rising from said bed, a looper-spindle disposed longitudinally of and within said work-supporting pillar, a support in which said looper-spindle is journaled, said su port being mounted to rock on aniaxis paral el to said bed, a reciprocating needle, a needle driving shaft, and actuating connections extending downwardly Within said bracketarm for rocking said looper-support and for oscillating said looper-spindle.
2. In a sewing machine having a frame including a bed plate, a looper spindle projecting upwardly through the bed late, a needle-driving shaft above the bed plate, an actuating member on said shaft, a structure beneath the bed plate mounted to rock on an axis parallel to said shaft, said structure sustaining the lower end of said spindle, connections between said shaft and said spindle for oscillating said spindle, and a connection between said actuating member and said structure for imparting rocking movements to said structure and thereby vibrating said spindle in a plane perpendicular to said shaft.
3. In a sewing machine in combination with a reciprocatory needle and a cooperating looper, a looper spindle substantially aligned with said needle, a needle-driving shaft, an eccentric on said shaft, two pintles on a line parallel with said shaft, a rocker mounted between said pintles, said rocker sustaining said looper spindle, and a lever engaged by said eccentric and having connections with said rocker on opposite sides of one of said pintles.
