Abstract
849,623. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 7, 1957 [Jan. 10, 1956], No. 773/56. Class 39(1). In a cathode-ray tube system using cathode modulation. the aperture in the cathode shield 2, unobstructed by a mesh or the like, is larger in diameter than the aperture in the anode 3 in order to obtain a high value of slope of the modulation characteristic. The cathode shield-anode spacing is 0À006 inch or less, e.g. 0À001 inch, as in Specification 707,064. The anode aperture preferably lies in the plane of the beam cross-over when a maximum modulating potential is applied to the cathode in order to avoid stopping of the beam by the anode aperture. A second anode 4 is provided for electrostatic focusing of the beam, or magnetic focusing may be used. Another advantage of the invention is stated to be the reduction of astigmatism. Suitable voltages and electrode spacings with typical characteristics are given.
