Abstract

848,191. Screwdrivers. TOMLIN, W. J., and HOPTON,E. C. May 26, 1959 [Feb. 13, 1959], No. 5066/59. Class 61. In a screwdriver having a chuck 13, Fig. 1, for holding screw heads the shank 5 is axially slidable within a hollow member 2 to which the chuck 13 is attached and is protracted by a spring 8 to eject screws &c. when the chuck 13 is released. The shank 5 has an integral boss 6 with keys 7 engaged within keyways 3 of the hollow member 2 to prevent relative rotation. A thimble 9 attached by a screw 10 to the end of the hollow member 2 is depressed against a spring 12 to slide the member 2 within the handle 1 to release the chuck 13. The shank 5 may be locked in the protracted position after extending beyond the keyways 3 and rotating the shank 5 so that lugs 14, Fig. 6, on the boss 6 engage recesses 15 on the end of the hollow member 2. Alternatively the shank 5 may be locked in various protracted positions by a pin 16, Fig. 5, engageable with recesses 17 in the shank 5.
