966,947. Wrenches. MERRITT & CO. (ENGINEERING) Ltd. May 22, 1963 [July 4, 1962], No. 25594/62. Heading B4W. A wrench which indicates with an audible click when a predetermined torque is reached comprises a spanner head 12 carried by a primary lever 14 which is pivoted at 15 to, and extends from within an outer tube 11, an inner tube 16 which is a sliding fit in the tube 11 and a signalling assembly enclosed in the inner tube. The signalling assembly comprises a secondary lever 17 which is connected to the lever 14 by a pin 14A and to the inner tube by a pivot pin 18; an intermediate movable member such as a ball 19 and a spring-pressed plunger 20 are provided. A graduated plate slidable in the inner tube 16 by means of an adjustment screw 27 which engages the thread of a non-rotatable nut 24 to which the plate is attached and allows the torque to be set and read against an index mark on the inner tube. On torque being applied by the tool to a nut &c., the secondary lever tends to turn, the torque reaching a value such that the spring 23 is forced to yield and the lever 17 is put in a state of unstable equilibrium whereupon the ball rolls and the lever strikes the internal surface of the inner tube 16 with an audible click. The intermediate member may comprise a prism making knife edge contact or a captive disc disposed obliquely and transversely between the secondary lever and the plunger, or a pawl having one end connected to the secondary lever.
