Abstract
795,932. Torque indicating wrenches. GARRINGTONS, Ltd. Dec. 10, 1956 [Sept. 9, 1955], No. 25807/55. Class 61. A torque indicating wrench has a work engaging means 13 on an arm 21 which protrudes longitudinally from a housing 11 to which it is rigidly connected by resilient means 24-29 until a predetermined torque is reached; when the predetermined torque is reached the rigid connection between the arm and the housing is broken and an indicator member 15 on the housing is moved to a warning position. The means 13 forms part of a ratchet head which can be engaged from either side so that the work may be tightened or unscrewed. The indicator 15 is in the form of a lever with side pieces 16 and is pivoted at 17, or of a disc as in Fig. 4 (not shown). Short diagonal slots 18, Fig. 2 (not shown), sloping towards the pivot 17, are cut in the side pieces 16 and overlap slightly longer horizontal slots 14 which are cut in the sides of the housing 11. A pin 19 passes through the arm 21 and protrudes through the slots 14 and 18 on both sides. A roller 22 on the inner end of the arm 21 engages in a recess 23 on a pawl 24 which is also pivoted at 17. A disc spring assembly 27 urges the pawl 27 into engagement with the roller 23 so that, normally, the arm 21 and the housing 11 move rigidly together. When the torque at the work engaging means 13 exceeds a predetermined value the pressure of the pawl on the roller due to the spring is overcome. The arm 21 can then move laterally in the housing so that the pin 19 causes the indicator 15 to hinge outwards, emitting an audible click. The limiting tension at which this occurs may be adjusted by turning a handle 34 which co-operates with a screwed plug 32 and a sleeve 30 to alter the compression on the spring 27. The adjusted setting may be locked by rotating a cap 37 on a screw 35 which engages axially with the plug 32 which has longitudinal slots that permit it to expand. A torque indicating scale may be provided in conjunction with the cap 37.
