845,948. Combing machines. RIETER & CIE A. G., J. J. May 30, 1958 [June 1, 1957], No. 17376/58. Class 120(1). -- In a rectilinear combing machine having a swinging upper mechanism, movement is imparted to the feed roller by the relative movement of the top and bottom nippers 13 and 3. Arms 12 carrying the top nipper 12 are pivoted to the bottom nipper by pins 15. A gear segment 61 is freely mounted on one pin 15 and is biassed by a spring 72 so that one end 75 of the segment abuts against the arm 12. The segment meshes with a gear 63 freely mounted on the end of the feed roller and driving the roller via a ratchet and-pawl mechanism, whereby the roller is rotated by the closing movement of the nippers. Manual feeding is effected by moving a protuberance 70 of segment 61 counter-clockwise against the action of spring 74. To remove the feed roller, the joint at a pin 73 between arm 12 and a link 21 is depressed past a dead centre position so that a pin 77 on arm 12 engages the hooked end of a spring 40 and pulls the spring away from a roller-retaining position; the roller can then be lifted clear of the bottom nipper 3, together with gear 63 and the ratchet mechanism.
