Class 120(1) A rectilinear combing machine having a lever 3 connected rigidly to the lower jaw 2 of a nipper and pivotally to the upper jaw 1 to impart reciprocatory movement to the nipper has a linkage that transmits raising and lowering movements to the upper jaw I in a manner to obviate hard hammering of the nipper jaws during closure. A link 6 and an arm 7 initiating the raising and lowering movements are approximately parallel to one another when the jaws are closed. The linkage consists of an arm 5, link 6, arm 7 and a pivot 8 fixed on the machine frame vertically above the connection 11 of the link 6 and the arm 5 that carries the upper jaw 1, and the drive to the linkage is from a shaft 14 on which an eccentric 15 or a crank is mounted.
