908,543. Combing machines. SOC. ALSACIENNE DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES. Sept. 2, 1959 [Sept. 12, 1958 ; Aug. 25, 1959], No. 29955/59. Class 120 (1). In a rectilinear combing machine, a suspension rod 4 is pivoted at its upper end 5 on the machine frame and at its lower end provides a common pivot or fulcrum 3 for two horizontal nipper levers, one arm of each of which carries upper and lower nipper jaws 1, 2, respectively. A swinging motion is imparted to the rod 4 to move the nippers relatively to the periphery of the circular comb 11 and the other arms of the levers are separately guided along different arcuate paths so directed that the lower jaw reciprocates tangentially to the circular comb from and towards a predetermined tangent point thereof and the upper jaw opens and closes in synchronism with the movement of the lower jaw. The ends of the levers mount rollers 6 and 8 which run in slideways 7 and 9 providing the arcuate paths and ensuring that a spring 10 presses together the jaws. The feed rack 15 is slideably moved on jaw 2 by a bellcrank lever 17 carrying a roller 19 which moves in a reciprocating slideway 20 actuated by cam 38 through follower 36, spring-controlled lever 32 pivoted at 35, rod 28, lever 23 pivoted at 24, link 26 and slide 21 moving in a stationary slideway 22. In a modification, Fig. 4, the rear end of each nipper lever may be articulated, as at 51 and 55, to connecting rods 52, 56, and 58, pivoted on the machine and the tension in spring 63 may be altered to adjust the clamping pressure between the jaws. The motions of the rod 4 are controlled by oscillatory movement of shaft 3 on which is keyed a lever 65 linked through connecting rod 66 with an eccentric crank-pin 67 mounted on a main control shaft 68. As shown in Fig. 5, the rack 15 is replaced by a feed roll 81 intermittently rotated by a ratchet-wheel 86 actuated by a dog 87 carried on a rocking lever 88 attached to a system of rods and levers 91, 92, 94, 95 (which is adjustable) actuated by a cam 99 on the shaft 68. As shown in Fig. 6, a top comb 121 is mounted on a bar 122 carried by a pendulum 123 articulated on a fixed pivot 124 and by an arm 125a of bell-crank lever 125 pivoted at 126 on nipper lever 2 ; arm 125b is articulated at 127 on another bell-crank lever 128, 128a rotatable around shaft 93 and linked through rod 132 to an adjustable lever 133 which is actuated by the cam 99.
