Abstract
630,529. Bookbinding-machines. AULD, W. A. H., and AULD, J. T. Aug. 18, 1947, No. 22898. [Class 16] A backing mechanism for a bookbinding machine comprises means for relieving the pressure on the backing member during part of its working stroke. A book inner 2 is brought by feeders 13 between guides 1 and on a rail 3 into position below a backing roller 14 and clamped between rounding rollers 4 and clamps 5, one of which is reciprocable by a toggle 6 operated by cams on the main shaft 12. The roller 14 is carried on members 20 slidable vertically in members 21 slidable horizontally on bars 22 slidable vertically in guides 23 on end brackets 16. The brackets 16 and one guide 1 are horizontally adjustable on the machine frame by interconnected feed screws 17, 18, the screw 18 of the guide 1 having a pitch double that of the other, whereby the roller 14 remains midway between the guides 1 when the latter are adjusted according to the thickness of the book inner. The bars 22 are connected by longitudinal stretchers 24 braced by cross-ties 25 having bearings for a crankshaft 27 carrying at each end a bifurcated lever 38 in which slides a block 39. The block 39 is adjusted by a screw rod passing through a cap piece secured across the lever 38, and carries a crankpin 40 engaging one of the members 20. The shaft 27 has a pinion engaging a rack 30 carried on arms 31 keyed to a shaft 34 keyed to a pinion 33 engaging a rack 36 adjustably connected by a turnbuckle 64 to a rod 63 actuated by a cam 60 on the shaft 12, whereby the shaft 27 is oscillated to move the pins 40 and roller 14 through an arcuate path. The slide members 22 are secured to links 47 pivoted to pressure rods 48 pivoted to the brackets 16 at 49 and connected adjustably by eccentric bushes 54 to brackets 51 slidable on rods 52 between compression or tension springs 53, or blocks of rubber. The rods 52 are reciprocated by cams on the shaft 12 so as to lower the roller 14 against the book inner and apply pressure thereto during the movement of the roller from its central to each of its extreme positions, and release the pressure during the return stroke. The backing member may be of slipper form. In another form, the pressure is applied by weights on the levers 48. Specification 593,855 is referred to.
