Abstract

680,260. Combing machines. SCHLEIFER, C. July 14, 1950 [July 22, 1949], No. 17693/50. Class 120(i) A rectilinear combing machine comprises nippers carried by a lever rockable about a normally stationary pivot, the nippers being formed by two scissor-like arms, each carrying at one of its ends a jaw, the jaw ends being adapted to move, during their forward travel, in front of a rotary comb and detaching rollers, the path of travel of the end of each jaw being in the form of an arc of a circle having its centre coincident with the axis of the comb as long as the nippers remain closed, whilst the end of the lower of the jaws is adapted to move along an arc of a circle having its centre coincident with the axis of the stationary pivot on opening of the nippers. As shown, arms 15, 18 carrying at one end the upper and lower nippers 16, 19 respectively are pivoted at 14 to a lever 8 which is rocked about a pivot 7 by a link 10 connected to an operating arm 12 rocking about a pivot 13. The other end of arm 15 carries a. roller 17 moving in a guide 6, and a coiled spring 21 is compressed between the other end of arm 18 and an: abutment, 22 on lever 8. As lever 8 swings forward, the ends of the nippers, which are held closed by spring 21, are constrained by the shape of guide 6 to move in an arcuate path concentric with the rotating comb P until a bolt 24 on arm 18 abuts a surface 25 on lever 8 after which the end of the lower nipper 19 moves away from comb P in an arcuate path concentric with pivot 7 while the end of the upper nipper 19 is constrained by the shape of guide 6 to move along a path away from the lower nipper, so that the nippers open. Guide 6 and pivot 7 are carried on a plate 2 which is adjustable about the axis 1 of comb P by means of an eccentric 5 to adjust the spacing of the nippers from the detaching rolls S at the end of the stroke of the nippers. In a modification, guide 6 and roller 17 are replaced by a suitably curved extension on arm 15 sliding between two rollers carried by plate 2.
