Abstract

563,282. Combing machines. NASMITH, G W., NASMITH, J. I., and DISTRICT BANK, Ltd. [Legal representatives of Nasmith, J. W.]. Oct. 30, 1942, Nos. 13753/42 and 18006/43. [Class 120 (i)] In order to increase the production of a Nasmith combing machine the use of the usual combing cylinder segment S is dispensed with and a guide plate 9 is fitted to rise and fall in a path between the detaching rollers D, d<1>, which rotate in fixed bearings, and the combing cylinder cover V and is synchronized in its movements with those of the rollers, nipper and top comb so that it engages, guides and controls in both directions an end of the fleece backed off for piecing ; the plate rises to its uppermost position to receive the end of the fleece as it begins to be backed off, descends with the fleece, then rises therewith and dwells during the rise until the top comb N<2> has commenced to withdraw, and finally resumes its uppermost position. As shown, the cylinder cover V is carried upward for protection against injury by the needle segment N and a pair of arms 5, pivotally mounted on the cylinder shaft and joined at their ends by the arcuate guide plate 9, are connected by rods 6 to levers 7 fixed on a rocking-shaft 8. The shaft 8 is actuated so that, as the detaching rollers D, d commence to back-off, or return a length of the previously detached fleece F for piecing, the tips of the fibres are directed to the guide plate 9 which moves downwards carrying the end of the fleece with it until the rollers reverse their rotation when the plate rises with returning fleece ; when the roller movement is nearly at an end, the roller-driving mechanism is disengaged, and during the slight dwell, before the rollers are again driven, the plate momentarily stops to allow the withdrawal of the retreating nipper N<1> and top comb N<2> and then follows them as the tuft held in the nippers is presented to the cylinder needles. To prevent any tendency for the tips of the fleece to follow around the surface of the roller D during backing-off, a flexible leather curtain 11 is secured at one end to a sector 14, pivoted freely on the shaft 8, and at the other end to projections 5a on the arm 5, and passes over a roller 10 mounted in an adjustable bearing so that, with the contiguous surfaces of the curtain and roller D always moving in opposite directions, any fibres tending to follow the roller are taken by the curtain downwards. The curtain is kept taut by a spring 15 and the roller 10 can be adjusted so that the curtain clears both of the rollers D, d. In a modification, the guide plate has its concave side directed towards the detaching rollers and is carried by arms pivoted on a fixed pin disposed beyond the roller d and oscillated by a rod and lever from the shaft 8 ; in this form the plate may act as a stripper for the roller d<1> and a cleaner roller may be disposed below and between the rollers D, d. Specification 489,003 is referred to.
