Combing - machines. -In a Heilmann type combing - machine in which a plate is provided below the nipper to move forward and support the tuft behind the top comb during the detaching period, the means for actuating the plate are connected and arranged to ensure that it shall follow the advancing movement of the top comb, as adjusted to suit the fibre being combed, and that it shall be withdrawn to a fixed position out of the way of the comb cylinder. The plate a, Fig. 1, is carried by a lever s pivoted to the member u carrying the nipper. The lever s is connected by a rod r to a lever y, moving on a fixed pivot w and connected at z' to the rod z which operates the top comb arm h through the lever q. The member u is reciprocated by the rock-shaft m. The rod z is adjustably connected to a slot in a lever x operated by a cam e. The cam e may operate an arm carrying an adjustable bowl bearing on the lever x, which may be connected directly to the rod z and through a link to the end of the lever y. The rod r, Fig. 3, may pivot about a centre u' and be connected to the plate a, and may bear at the other end on a cam surface v on the lever y. The rod r may be connected by a link to the end of the lever y.
