Abstract

229,909. Nasmith, J. W. May 22, 1924. Combing machines. - In an arrangement of the kind described in Specification 188,611, in which a feed nipper is provided in the main nipper to draw back into the nipper a certain amount of the lap from behind the top comb before the main nipper closes, the lower jaw F of the feed nipper is suspended from the nipper frame N<1> by a link 6, and is connected by a pivoted arm 4 to a lever L<1>, L mounted on a pin 1 carried by the main nipper bridge B. The lower end of the lever arm L is connected by an adjustable rod 8 to a swivel-piece 9 carried by an arm 10 on a fixed shaft 11. The upper jaw F<1> of the feed nipper is carried by a lever 3 pivoted on the pin 2. The lever 3 at its lower end is connected to a spring S and carrier a bowl 13 adapted as the main nipper swings about its pivot N to come into contact with an inclined stop-piece 16. The bowl 13 travels up the stoppiece 16 during the further movement of the nipper and the lever 3 is raised against the action of the spring S, which normally keeps the feed nipper closed. The stop-piece 16 is mounted on an arm 16 loosely mounted on a rock shaft 15, operated by a cam M on the comb cylinder shaft. The arm 16 is adjustably secured by a bolt 17 to an arm 14 keyed to the shaft 15. During the rearward movement of the nipper the arm 19 rests on a circular part of the cam 17 and the stop-piece is stationary, but during the forward movement the shaped part of the cam operates to move the stop-piece and alter the stage at which the feed-nipper is closed. The cam M can be adjusted upon its shaft. The arm 19 is free on the shaft 15 and can be adjustably secured to a plate 21 also loose on the shaft and adapted to be coupled to an arm 30 keyed to the shaft by the engagement of one or other of 'the holes 28, 29 with a hole in the arm 30, a pin passing through the holes. By these means the time of opening on the backward journey and the time of closing on the forward journey can be independently regulated. Each feed nipper can be adjusted relatively to the main nipper by means of the nuts on the rod 8, and the nippers of a series of heads in a machine can be simultaneously adjusted by turning the shaft 11 and securing it in position bv a bolt 26 in a slotted arm 25. The feed of any head can be arrested by pivotally mounting the stop-piece 16 on the arm 16 and supporting it by a notched latch engaging a lug on the arm, so that the piece 16 can be moved back to prevent contact with the bowl 13. To stop the feed in a series of heads in the machine the shaft 15 is turned until the hole 28 in the plate 21 registers with the hole in the arm 30 and the pin is inserted through these holes. '
