A drafting mechanism for textile machines having a top roller carrier arm extending over at least one top roller and carrying top roller holders incorporating weighting means and retainable in its operative position by a catch mechanism incorporating a pressing means which extends through the arm and is under the influence of a spring is characterized in that the pressing means is arranged in the front part of this arm and has the form of a pressing button movable in the direction at right angles to the drafting plane the button being connected with the catch by at least one intermediate member. As shown in Fig. 2 a top roller carrier arm C is pivotally mounted on a bracket B by means of a bolt 11, the bracket B being supported from the roller stand in the usual manner. The catch mechanism comprises a catch 19 of channel cross-section which reaches around the frame 18 of the carrier arm such that its lower end 20 engages a nose 21 on the bracket B. A spring 24 urges the lower end 20 of the catch into engagement with the nose 21. The catch 19 carries a pin 25 which extends across the frame 18 and moves in a front and rear direction in a slot 26 in the frame 18 during pivotal movement of the catch 19. An eye 27 in a plate 28 engages the pin 25 and the plate 28 is attached to a pin 29 carried by a shoulder 30 on the inner surface of the frame 18. The plate 28 has a key 31 which projects through an opening 33 in the frame 18 such that when the key 31 is pressed the plate 28 is bent thereby moving the pin 25 in a forward direction and causing the latch 19 to swing so that its lower end 20 is withdrawn from the nose 21. The carrier arm C may then be swung in an upward direction on the bolt 11. In the arrangement of Fig. 4 a movable button 48 is provided to release the catch 38 from engagement with the nose 21 through the system of levers clearly shown. In further similar embodiments a wedge shaped operating member is used to move the catch and in a further embodiment a press button operates on a pivoted lever which in turn operates on the catch member to disengage the latter when the button is pressed. In two other embodiments the catch means is provided at the front end of the arm and is operated by a press button engaging a bell crank lever in one instance and in the other by a press button having a wedge shaped formation which engages between two members operating like scissors and having hooked ends for engaging a T-shaped portion on the machine frame.
