Abstract

724,285. Roller weighting apparatus. T. M. M. (RESEARCH), Ltd. Oct. 12, 1953, [Oct. 10, 1952], No. 25433/52. Class 120 (2). Drafting apparatus of the type wherein the upper rollers are mounted in aligned pairs each upon a common arbor having its ends supported between pairs of cap-bars which are pivotally mounted at the rear of the drafting apparatus and which are separate from the cap bars supporting axially adjacent rollers is characterized in that each pair of upper rollers is loaded by the application of a downward force to a saddle resting upon the common arbor between them, said saddle being mounted for pivotal movement upon a pivot carried by the cap bars such that whilst said saddle is independently movable, it may also be raised with the rollers by raising the cap bar. In the embodiment shown, 10 indicates the roller beam and 11 the roller stand of a speed frame. There are four sets of drafting elements viz., rear rollers 12 and 13, intermediate rollers 14 and 15, an apron assembly 16, 17, 18 and roller 19 and front rollers 20 and 21. The upper rollers 12, 14, 16 and 20 and the tensor 18 of each drafting section are constituted by pairs of bosses carried upon arbors which are supported at the extremities between pairs of cap bars 22, 23 (not shown) which are pivotable on a shaft 24 extending along the rear of the apparatus. The position of the rollers 12, 14, 16 and the tensor 18, along the cap-bars is adjustable. Weighting is applied to the upper drafting elements through a saddle 27 which rests upon the arbors of the several roller pairs and is mounted for pivotal movement on a shaft 28 which spans the space between cap-bars 22 and 23 (not shown). This arrangement permits the saddle 27 to be lifted independently and also to be lifted with the cap-bars when the latter are raised. The saddle is, conveniently, made in two separate mating parts 271 and 272. The actual loading of the upper rollers is by the application of a weight 31 to the lower extremity of a stirrup 32 suspended from the saddle 27. The foot of the stirrup 32 is pivotally connected to a lever 34 which is pivoted to the roller beam 10 and the upper end of the stirrup is connected to the saddle 27 through a link 37 pivoted to a lever 38 one end of which is linked to a camlever 39 by a pivot pin 40 which is fixed to the saddle 27. If the weight lever 34 is raised the weight 31 is relieved by the engagement of the sprag 42 with the beam plate 44 and the stirrup 32 is pushed rearwardly, by the impingement of the face 341 against the abutment 321, so that it becomes disengaged from the link 37, and the entire assembly of the upper drafting elements may be raised into an inoperative position. If the front roller 20 only is to be removed the weight lever 34 is raised and the cam lever 39 is pivoted about the pin 40 so the lobe 391 of said lever bears against the saddle member 411 raising the fore end of the saddle 27 so that the roller 20 can be removed from the right-angled slots 26.
