In a top-roller supporting-and loading-arm of the kind which can be swung about a fixed axis between operative and inspirative positions, one only of the top-rollers is loaded by pressurefluid-operated mechanism which includes a pressure-responsive means and a non-resilient mechanical transmission between the pressure-responsive means and the said one top roller. In Fig. 1, an arm 1 swings about a rod 2 housing a piston and cylinder, the piston bearing against a spring- urged pivoted bell-crank 13 linked at 15 to a second pivoted bell-crank 14. As the piston rises, the lower arm of lever 14 rocks against a guidearm 7 of a top delivery roller 3. The lower arm of lever 13 bears at 21 on an arm of a locking- bell crank 18 having a roller 19 engaging by its weight &c in a shoulder 20 in the rod 2 to lock the arm. When the piston is releaved of pressure, spring 22 rocks the lever 13 to rock lever 18 and disengage the roller from the shoulder to free the arm 1 so that it can be raised. The other rollers are loaded by springs 10 bearing on the corresponding guide-arms 7, the springs and guide arms being carried in holders 8, 8<SP>1</SP> in guides 17 in the arm 1 and the link 15 having an extension 15<SP>1</SP> so that the position of lever 14 can be adjusted. In Fig. 2, a pressure tube 32 in a tube 31 runs the length of the machine and a pair of spaced plates 33 is clamped by a stirrup 35 to the tube at each drafting position. An arm 1<SP>1</SP> is pivoted at 37 between each pair of plates, 37 also forming a pivot for a lever 38 having a lug 39 extending into a pressure-strip 40 by which the tube 32 is deformed. The lever 38 is connected to the arm 1<SP>1</SP> at 44 by the toggle-linkage shown, the upper lever 43 of the linkage being connected to an operating lever 47 and being pivoted to arm 1, and accordingly the arm loads the front roller 3 through an adjustable support 26<SP>1</SP> carrying pins 27, the upper one serving as a pivot for a guide-arm 7<SP>11</SP> and the lower one bearing as shown on the guide-arm. The other rollers are loaded through members 29 by spiral springs 28 each carried in adjustable supports 26. When the arm is raised, the pivot 45 of the toggle moves to a position near the lug 39 on the other side of the lever 38, Fig. 3 (not shown). In Fig. 5, the lever 38<SP>1</SP> is pivoted on a rod 35<SP>1</SP> between the plates 33<SP>1</SP>, to which the arm is pivoted at 37, while the tube 32<SP>1</SP> and lug 39<SP>1</SP> are disposed as shown to the right of the rod. In another form, the arm is also pivotable about the rod, the plates 33<SP>1</SP> and pivot 37 being dispensed with. In all forms, the upward movement of the lever 38 is limited by the strip 40 abutting the wall of the tube 31; stops may provided on the lever 38 or the links of the toggle to determine their positions when the arm is operative, while means are provided to hold the arm in raised position.
