706,054. Drafting textile fibres. T.M.M. (RESEARCH), Ltd., and BYERLEY, W. G. Oct. 24. 1952 [Oct. 31, 1951], No. 25467/51. Class 120(2) A spinning or like machine has drafting apparatus divided into discrete units capable of supplying roving to one or a group of spindles, each unit being selfcontained in that all its drafting elements are mounted in a frame that is removably or pivotally supported and the drafting elements are driven from a common driving member extending through a section or throughout the whole length of the machine. A frame 17, 18 pivoted on a rail 13 carries lower rollers 14, 15. 16 mounted in pairs on shafts journalled in the frame and provided with gears 31, 26, 23 driven through idlers from a gear 20 fixed on a shaft 12 driven from the headstock and common to several frames 17, 18. All the gears and idlers intermediate the gear 20 and the roller shafts are housed in a gearcase 32 that forms a removable unit. In order to hold the frame in operative position, a spring-pressed latch 171 engages notches in bosses 173 fixed to the rail 13. The upper rollers (not shown) are mounted on a support arm pivoted on the rail 13 and provided with a spring-loaded catch for engagement with a loop 181 on the frame 17, 18. In a doublesided machine, all the drafting units may be driven from one shaft 12. According to the Provisional Specification units employing drafting aprons may be used.
