Abstract

696,124. Wringers. CLEIFF, J. A., and ALUMINIUM BRONZE CO., Ltd. Nov. 17, 1949. [Nov. 21, 1948] No. 29403/49. Divided out of 27329/48. Class 138 (ii). A power-driven wring- er incorporates twc "knock-off" members 28 extending lengthwise of the machine, one at the front and the other at the back thereof, a transverse member 23 normally supported at two spaced positions and connected to the members 28, and a locking part 19 adapted to lock a movable roller 5 in working position and located intermediate the supports of the transverse member 23, the member 23 being fulcrummed on one of the supports, Fig. 5 (not shown) to release the locking part 19 and the movable roller when one of the members 28 is depressed or the other member 28 is elevated, and on the other support to release the part 19 and roller 5 when the other member 28 is depressed or the first-mentioned member 28 is elevated. The upper roller 5 rotates in bearings 4 depending from a beam member 9 which can be turned about its pivot 10 by a spring 13 but is held in working position by a bell-crank lever' 14 pivoted to the beam 9 at 15a. One arm 16 of the lever 14 carries a pair of laterally projecting pins 17 engaging in L-shaped slots 18 in a slide member 3. By moving the beam 9 downwardly about its pivot 10 the pins 17 are traversed down the upright limbs of the slots 18, and then moved into locking position by angular displacement of the lever 14 about its pivot 15a. The locking part 19 is pivoted at one end to the upper part of the lever 14 and is provided with a tooth 20 adapted to engage an abutment 21 on the beam 9 and hold the lever 14 in locking position. A spring 22 returns the lever 14 to unlocked position (Fig. 2) when the tooth 20 is disengaged by either "knock-off" member 28. Two further spaced supporting bars 25, 26 may be attached to the knock-off member-one near each end of the member. One may serve simply as a support while the other (25) may also serve positively to disengage the lever 14 in the event of failure of the spring 22. The rollers 5, 6 may be pressed together by compression springs 1 located between the bottom roller bearings 2 and slides 3 which transmit pressure to the upper roller through its bearings 4. In a modification, tension springs are used in place of the springs 1. To facilitate the entry of thick articles between the rollers, another spring, longer and weaker than the spring 1 may be used at each end of the machine. This spring is concentric with and located within the spring 1 and makes operation of the pressure release mechanism easier.
