Abstract
297,909. Briscoe, J. July 21, 1927. Combing-machines. - In combing-machines of the Heilmann and Nasmith types the tuft held between the nippers at one end and the top detaching-roller and a fixed secondary cushion plate at the other end is severed by the movement of the top comb and both ends so formed are combed by the cylinder. The detaching- rollers are rotated intermittently solely in the forward direction and the fleece of pieced tufts is passed by drawing-rollers to the ordinary sliver plate. The nipper frame 23, Fig. 1, is mounted on the cylinder shaft 21 and is reciprocated by a rock-shaft 35, arm 34 and link 33. The arm 34 has an up and down motion to cause the nipper to move back slowly during combing. The upper jaw 25 is carried by a pivoted arm 26 and is controlled by a bowl 30 on the arm engaging a fixed cam 31. The top detaching-roller 47 rolls over the lower roller 46 and the pieced sliver passes through rollers 48, 49 to drawing-rollers 50, 51 and the sliver plate 20. A secondary cushion plate 52 is mounted on a rod 53 below the rollers 46, 47 and can be adjusted relatively to the needles of the cylinder 22 by a screw 55. The plate 52 is recessed to accommodate the rollers 46, 47 and has a raised edge 52<a> to nip the fibre against the roller 47 when such roller moves back towards the nipper 23 over the lower roller. The roller 47 is weighted by the usual hook 56 and a spring 69. The hook 56 is provided with an extension 68 which can be engaged by an arm 67, 66 to relieve the roller of the weight. The hook 56 is pivoted at 57 on an arm 58 mounted on a shaft 59 which can be rocked bv an arm 60 to move the roller 47. The top comb 38 is mounted on an arm 37 pivoted on the nipper frame and carrying a bowl 38<a> resting on an arm 39. The arm 39 is pivoted at 40 and rests at the other end on a bowl 42 carried by an arm 43 mounted on the rock shaft 59. The arms 43, 58 on the shaft 59 are rocked by engagement with set screws 70 carried by the arm 60. The arm 60 is connected by a link to an arm on a rock shaft controlled by a cam on the cylinder shaft. The cylinder shaft also carries a boss having a peg mounted on it, which operates a star wheel to impart intermittent motion in one direction only to the lower detaching-roller. The drawing- rollers are geared to the lower detaching-roller. The nipper 23 is reciprocated along the path a, b, Fig. 10, whilst the top comb moves backwards along the slightly divergent path c, d, and forward along the path e, f, being raised towards the end to be out of the way for the piecing operation. When the nippers 24, 25 are in their extreme forward position the fleece is gripped by the roller 47 against the edge 52<a> of the plate 52. The nippers then close and move back. The top comb 38 is lowered and moving back with the nippers severs the tuft and combs the rear end of the tuft 100, Fig. 5. The cylinder combs the forward end of the tuft 101 held by the nippers and the rear end of the tuft 100. The top comb is lifted, the nippers move forward and feed the tuft 101 into the gap between the plate 52 and the roller 47 which has been moved round the roller 46 away from the plate. The rollers are rotated to move the pieced tufts forward. If there is an excessive amount of impurities in the cotton the cylinder may be provided with a fibre or metallic brush 103, Fig. 8, mounted on a wooden lag 104 behind the needles. The lag carries a cover plate 105 secured to the stock 107 by a screw, and can be adjusted by a wedge 110 and screw 111 bearing against the surface 112 of the stock 107.
