Description

J. W. NASMITH COMBING MACHINE Jan. 30, 1934.
Filed Nov. 18, 1930 In ven /0r.= /,L u. Mm)! ,By His Hal/0272:; r
Patented Jan. 39, 1934 M w en FFICE COMBING MACHINE John William Nasmith, Heaton Mersey, Manchester, England Application November 18, 1936, Serial No.
498,367, and in Great Britain May 13, 193i) 4 Claims.
In my co-pending application for Letters Patent of the United States Serial No. 424,050 I have described and claimed a fibre tuft detaching means in textile fibre combing machines, which 5 means consist of a detaching roller co-acting with the usual combing cylinder segment to form a detaching nip, the said detaching roller being given a movement to and from the machine nipper. The movement of a top comb to and from the said machine nipper, synchronously with the detaching roller movement, is also described.
The present invention is directed to certain improvements relating to the top comb in a combing machine as just indicated and according to such improvements the top comb is allowed to dwell momentarily just before its return from the machine nipper. This gives a very clean and even separation of the fibre tuft from the lap as will be understood, as the top comb due to its stop 2O or dwell before following the detaching roller oifers a resistance to the pull of the latter as the last of the fibre tuft passes through the comb needles.
My invention also contemplates a further improvement in relation to the top comb, and consists in means for imparting to the said comb when it has entered the fibre tuft, a slight lift within such tuft. The comb and tuft lifting together there is an easing of the tuft within the comb needles, with avoidance of undesired extraction of waste.
For a full understanding of the invention a drawing is annexed hereto showing a very practical and compact mechanism for effecting both movements, to wit, the dwell of the top comb and also the lift of such comb when in the fibre tuft being combed.
The drawing is a side elevation of the parts and those parts of the combing machine which are A0 essential to be shown for proper description, are
illustrated.
Referring to the drawing: The shaft 1 is oscillated to and fro and keyed thereon is the lever 2 and linked to it with means of adjustment is the connecting rod 3, hinged on the pin 4 fixed in a lever 5, which in turn pivots on a stud 6 fixed in the framing of the machine. Articulated also on the pin 4 is the weight hook '7 which engages the neck of the detaching roller 8. The rocking motion of the shaft 1 is thus imparted to the lever 5, the weight hook '7 and the detaching roller 8, the latter alternately approaching to and receding from the nipper 9.
The to and fro movement of the upper end of the lever 5 is utilized to impart the ordinary lift to the top combnecessary to lift it as usual to clear the cylinder needles as they pass-by coming in contact with the adjusting screw 10 carried in the top comb arm 11. 0
The drawing shows a convenient and compact mechanism for effecting the traverse of the top comb independently of the detaching roller traverse for the purpose of the invention, and combined therewith a simple mechanism for impart- 5 ing to the top comb an adjustable degree of lift in the tuft. Cast on the framing-indicated at l2--is an 13 with a vertical projection 14. The arm 13 carries fixed therein a stud 15 on which pivots freely a two armed lever 16. A 79 bowl 17 is carried on a stud fixed in the top comb arm 11 and in the vertical projection 14 is an adjusting screw 18. When the lever 5 is out of contact with the screw 10 the bowl 17 rests on the horizontal arm of the lever 16 and the vertical arm of lever 16 is against the set screw 18, which is adjusted so that the top comb needles are at the appropriate distance from the leather covered segment. A second bowl 19 is carried on a second stud fixed in the arm 11 and in the vertical arm of the lever 16 is an adjusting screw 20. Just as the detaching roller 8 is about to contact with the leather covered segment, the shaft 21 is caused to make a slight counterclockwise movement displacing the stud 22 to the right and along with it the top comb 23 which assumes the position shown dotted at 23a whilst the detaching roller has followed and overtaken it by reaching the position dotted at 8a. This movement being independent of the detaching 99 movement permits of the slight dwell of the top comb, before it commences to return, being effected by suitable timing of the shaft 21 in relation to shaft 1. If the screw 20 be adjusted so as to rest against the bowl 19 when this movement of shaft 21 begins, the lever 16 will be turned on its pivot 15 and its horizontal arm raised causing the comb 23 to rise slightly from the combing cylinder-indicated at 24=-to the 100 the top comb may be varied from zero to a required maximum which is necessarily small but effective in controlling the amount of waste when this is required to be as low as possible.
The shafts 1 and 21 are oscillated and timed by means well known in the combing machine l l( art, and such means are not therefore herein described.
I claim:-
1. In a combing machine of the construction referred to, a detaching roller, a top comb carrier, means for imparting a usual lift to the top comb carrier and at the same time oscillating the detaching roller, and a reciprocating member connected to the top comb carrier which member is operated and timed independently of the top comb and roller oscillating means.
2. In a combing machine of the construction referred to, a detaching roller, a top comb carrier, a pivoted arm contacting such carrier, an oscillatable shaft and lever connected to such arm which shaft also oscillates the detaching roller, and a further oscillatable shaft and lever connected to the top comb carrier, such further shaft being oscillated and timed independently of the first named oscillatable shaft.
3. In a combing machine of the construction referred to, a reciprocated top comb carrier, a bell crank lever one arm of which is in lifting contact with the top comb carrier, and a stop on the other arm of such lever making contact with the top comb carrier at a point in the backward reciprocation of the latter.
4. In a combing machine of the construction referred to, a reciprocated top comb carrier, a bell crank lever one arm of which is in lifting contact with the top comb carrier, and an adjustable stop on the other arm of such lever making contact with the top comb carrier at a point in the backward reciprocation of the latter, such stop being entirely removable by adjustment from the backward path thereof.
